Volunteer/Chaperone
Band Fans Parent Organization supports all the Horizon High School bands. As parents of Horizon band students, we offer our time and talent to help the faculty and students maintain their high level of performance on and off the field.
Each of us has limited time to volunteer, but when everyone helps a little, we get a lot done. We encourage you to attend the Band Fans meetings and check this website regularly to keep informed of current needs.
Lots of Volunteers Needed
With the new school year upon us and the first Horizon Pride Regiment performance just days away, we need lots of help. Active parent involvement is essential to our students’ success, so please sign up for as much as you can! (If you’re on the fence and would like more info about any of these volunteer opportunities, don’t hesitate to contact the parent who is listed for each one. They’d be happy to talk it over with you.)
- Lunch Volunteers – We raise a substantial amount just by handing out lunch items at the school, and it’s a quick and easy way to volunteer. You can sign up for a regular shift one day a week or for occasional help. You’re typically in and out in 45 minutes. email hidden; JavaScript is required
- Uniform Committee – We are looking for someone to take on the “understudy” role for uniforms, training to take the lead role in the uniform fitting process a year from now. email hidden; JavaScript is required
- Game and Competition Chaperones –
We typically need 12-14 parents to chaperone home and away football games and competitions. Chaperones help with equipment (water jugs, bench covers, banners, etc), supervision, and rolling percussion instruments on and off the field. It’s fun and easy and a great way to make friends with other HPR parents. email hidden; JavaScript is required - Truck Driver – We rent one truck to haul instruments to away games and competitions, and sometimes a second one to haul backdrops. Driving the trucks is a great job for a band dad. email hidden; JavaScript is required
- Backdrops Crew –
We use a crew of six to assemble our backdrops, roll them on and off the field for performances, and disassemble them. At competitions, where we sometimes have to roll long distances, we like to have a couple of extra “rollers” to trade off. See the schedule here and email hidden; JavaScript is required - Event Managers – We held a successful Golf-a-Thon fundraiser last fall, which we’d like to repeat, and we’d like to do a 10K Run fundraiser, but we need volunteers to head up the efforts. Both events have lots of institutional support and a proven track record. email hidden; JavaScript is required
Other Band Needs
This is probably a good time to mention that Band Fans is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so your donations of cash and goods may be tax deductible.
- Cash Donations – Parents pay fees that cover about 60% of the operating expenses of the band program each year. We depend on fundraising and donations to cover the other 40%. Anyone – grandparents, neighbors, employers, merchants – can donate, and our new Donations page makes it simple to donate online.
Due to reassignment of classrooms at Horizon, the music program lost a lot of space for this coming year. To help us store and transport instruments and equipment, we could use any or all of these items. email hidden; JavaScript is required:
- A portable storage container – 12+ feet long. If you work for a company or know someone who would be interested in donating a container to the program, we’d love your help.
- Offsite storage – Do you have space in a garage or warehouse where we could store backdrops, accessible for all games and competitions?
- Instrument storage – We have plans to build instrument storage shelves and racks to make more efficient use of our space, but we need a donation of lumber and hardware.
- A trailer – A sturdy 12-foot cargo trailer would eliminate our need to rent a second truck. A loaner would be great, and a donation would be excellent.
- A big trailer or a truck – Someone with the right connections could be a superstar for the Horizon Pride Regiment, with the donation of a large cargo truck or trailer to eliminate our truck rental costs.
Volunteer Requirements
All volunteers need to be a current member of the HHS parent booster club, PAWS. All volunteers must also complete the Band Fans and PVUSD volunteer paperwork. Links to all the required forms can be found on our Forms & Docs page.
